Six years after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer, Naeem Ali, managing director of Namalco Construction Services Ltd, has been cleared of all charges. Namalco is a construction company based in La Brea, Trinidad.

Ali’s attorneys, Senior Counsel Pamela Elder and Owen Hinds Jr, successfully convinced Senior Magistrate Erica Baptiste-Ramkissoon that their client had no case to answer.

The Siparia District Magistrate agreed and officially freed Ali of all allegations on Tuesday.

The charges stemmed from an incident on July 1, 2020, at Suchit Trace, Penal, when Ali was stopped during a police exercise while on his way home.

Police alleged that Ali overtook a long line of vehicles, failed a breathalyser test and, in attempting to evade prosecution, assaulted three officers.

In response, Ali filed private criminal charges against Constables Christopher Nanan, Satish Ramlal and Maxine Timothy, accusing them of assaulting him and stealing $200,000.

The cross-charges brought by Ali against the officers are scheduled to continue on April 24.

The original case was prosecuted by State Attorney Hannah Kaljam-Ali.
