Mutroo and Ransome take top honours at Chaguanas Calypso Finals

Am­ri­ka Mutroo and Zach Ran­some have been crowned the Se­nior and Ju­nior Ch­agua­nas Ca­lyp­so Mon­archs for 2026, fol­low­ing a com­pet­i­tive fi­nal on the big stage at Ram­saran Street, Ch­agua­nas, on Sat­ur­day.

The ju­nior seg­ment kicked off short­ly be­fore 7 pm, with eight con­tes­tants de­liv­er­ing spir­it­ed per­for­mances for the pan­el of judges. Ran­some, clinched the ti­tle with 379 points.

Kadon Hart placed sec­ond with 364 points for Phi­los­o­phy of the Road, while Chelsea Figueroa fin­ished third with 332 points.

In the se­nior cat­e­go­ry, 12 fi­nal­ists com­pet­ed in a tight­ly con­test­ed round. Mutroo emerged vic­to­ri­ous with 373 points. Nakasa Thatch­er placed sec­ond with 372 points , while He­len Jones se­cured third with 370 points.

Ch­agua­nas Car­ni­val Com­mit­tee chair­man Melis­sa Jadoo­nanan praised the high stan­dard of the com­pe­ti­tion.

“Ca­lyp­so is root­ed in T&T’s cul­ture. This art form is one of the dis­tinc­tive ways we iden­ti­fy with our cul­ture and as a peo­ple. It’s so­cial com­men­tary at its finest, with grand dis­plays and the­atri­cal per­for­mances. One rhythm, one peo­ple. We could not say it bet­ter. Ch­agua­nas is al­so a plat­form for the cul­ture,” she said.
