Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles have extended congratulations to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley following her historic third consecutive victory in Barbados’ February 11, 2026, General Elections.

Speaking on behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, Persad-Bissessar praised Mottley’s leadership and the confidence shown by the Barbadian electorate. She also congratulated the Barbados Labour Party on its decisive success and the people of Barbados for a peaceful democratic exercise.

“This renewed mandate reflects the deep confidence of the Barbadian people in Prime Minister Mottley’s leadership, and in the vision, record, and achievements of the BLP. Her resounding victory stands as a powerful affirmation of trust earned and leadership proven,” Persad-Bissessar said. She described securing a third consecutive landslide as an exceptional accomplishment and a testament to Mottley’s commitment to national development, resilience, and progress.

Persad-Bissessar reflected on her longstanding personal and professional friendship with Mottley, dating back to their early careers as Caribbean attorneys and collaborations on regional legal matters, including a 2009 engagement in Saint Kitts and Nevis supporting a constitutional challenge.

“Over the years, our bond has deepened as contemporaries in political leadership, serving as Prime Ministers of our respective nations, united by common democratic values and a shared responsibility to advance the interests of our peoples and strengthen Caribbean unity,” she said. She also recalled her formative years in Barbados while pursuing legal studies at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, and the enduring respect and affection she developed for the Barbadian people.

Persad-Bissessar noted Mottley’s attendance at her swearing-in ceremony following the UNC’s April 28, 2025, victory in Trinidad and Tobago, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations. She said Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados continue to collaborate on food and energy security, climate resilience, economic integration, and promoting a stronger Caribbean voice internationally.

On behalf of the Opposition of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the People’s National Movement, Beckles also extended warm congratulations to Mottley and the Barbados Labour Party. “This outcome reflects the continued confidence of the Barbadian people in Prime Minister Mottley’s leadership and her steadfast commitment to national development and regional engagement,” Beckles said.

Beckles noted that Mottley first assumed office on May 25, 2018, making history as the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Barbados. She said Mottley has since guided Barbados through significant economic reform, the historic transition to a parliamentary republic in 2021, and amplified the voice of Small Island Developing States on the global stage, particularly in advocating for climate justice and equitable financing for vulnerable nations.

“We welcome her renewed mandate and look forward to continued collaboration in the spirit of partnership, progress and Caribbean unity,” Beckles said. She also acknowledged the Democratic Labour Party and its candidates for their participation in the democratic process, adding that strong democracies are strengthened by principled representation and engagement across the political spectrum.

“The people of Barbados have once again demonstrated their steadfast commitment to democracy. As fellow Small Island Developing States within CARICOM, our nations remain united in purpose, working together to advance economic resilience, social progress and regional solidarity,” Beckles said. She concluded by wishing the Government and people of Barbados every success and reaffirming Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
