Police officer shot during Tunapuna patrol

A po­lice of­fi­cer was shot and in­jured dur­ing a pa­trol in Tu­na­puna on Mon­day night.

Po­lice said of­fi­cers at­tached to the North­ern Di­vi­sion were on mo­bile pa­trol along Main­got and Fair­ley Streets around 8 pm when they re­spond­ed to a re­port of as­sault.

While in­ter­view­ing the vic­tim, a sus­pect armed with a high-pow­ered ri­fle opened fire on the po­lice ve­hi­cle, hit­ting one of the of­fi­cers in the right leg.

The of­fi­cer’s leg was bro­ken and he al­so sus­tained oth­er gun­shot in­juries.

A civil­ian al­so was shot dur­ing the in­ci­dent.

The in­jured of­fi­cer and the civil­ian were tak­en to the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex in Mt Hope for treat­ment.

An­oth­er of­fi­cer dis­charged sev­er­al rounds dur­ing the in­ci­dent.
