Over $7M in cannabis seized and destroyed

Po­lice seized and de­stroyed more than $7 mil­lion worth of cannabis dur­ing a se­ries of an­ti-crime op­er­a­tions con­duct­ed across sev­er­al di­vi­sions on Wednes­day and Thurs­day.

Two sus­pects were ar­rest­ed and a firearm and quan­ti­ties of cannabis were seized dur­ing the ex­er­cis­es, which were car­ried out by mul­ti­ple spe­cialised units.

In one op­er­a­tion around mid­day on Thurs­day (Jan­u­ary 8), of­fi­cers of the Cou­va Po­lice Sta­tion re­ceived in­tel­li­gence that led them to Martha Street.

Dur­ing a com­pre­hen­sive search in the vicin­i­ty of a chain link fence, of­fi­cers dis­cov­ered one re­volver loaded with am­mu­ni­tion.

In the North­ern and North-East­ern Di­vi­sions, Task Force of­fi­cers con­duct­ed an in­tel­li­gence led ex­er­cise at an aban­doned struc­ture at Boys Lane, DAbadie.

A search of the lo­ca­tion re­sult­ed in the dis­cov­ery of a black plas­tic bag con­tain­ing 1.8 kilo­grammes of cannabis. That op­er­a­tion was co­or­di­nat­ed by Act­ing Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent May­nard Wil­son, Su­per­in­ten­dent Mc Ken­zie and As­sis­tant Su­per­in­ten­dent Ablacks­ingh.

Mean­while, of­fi­cers of the Spe­cial Re­sponse Unit car­ried out an ex­er­cise in the Cap de Ville dis­trict be­tween 5 pm and 8 pm on Wednes­day (Jan­u­ary 7).

A ve­hi­cle with two male oc­cu­pants was in­ter­cept­ed and searched, lead­ing to the dis­cov­ery of 26.5 kilo­grammes of cannabis with an es­ti­mat­ed street val­ue of one mil­lion dol­lars. Both sus­pects were ar­rest­ed. The ex­er­cise was spear­head­ed by As­sis­tant Com­mis­sion­er Hazel.

And in the East­ern Di­vi­sion, a large-scale cannabis erad­i­ca­tion ex­er­cise was con­duct­ed in the Biche dis­trict.

Of­fi­cers trekked sev­er­al kilo­me­tres in­to a forest­ed and swampy area where they dis­cov­ered two grow hous­es con­tain­ing about 6,000 ful­ly grown cannabis plants val­ued at $6 mil­lion.

The plants and equip­ment were de­stroyed.
