The number of road fatalities has risen to 108 for the year, following two separate incidents in Piarco and Chaguanas yesterday.

The comparative figure for the same period last year stood at 122.

Police said, in the first incident, the driver of a car was flung from the vehicle upon impact and is said to have suffered a broken neck.

That accident occurred around 3.54 am yesterday along the westbound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in the vicinity of the Piarco Walkover. Police said the driver, whose name was not released to the media, was found 30 feet from the wreck, partially submerged and lying face down in the watery ditch, with visible head injuries.

Four other people were said to be in his car at the time, and all had to be treated at the hospital.

An eyewitness told police the motorist who had been driving the silver Nissan Note reportedly lost control and veered off the road before crashing into the concrete barriers separating the two lanes of the highway.

Although several motorists stopped to render assistance, fire officials had to help in the extraction of the four people who had been trapped in the car.

And in the second incident, around 9.10 am yesterday, officers assigned to the Chaguanas Police Station, along with personnel from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch in Freeport, responded to a report of an accident along the south-bound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway in the vicinity of Jerningham Junction in Charlieville.

Upon arrival, officers found Sumraj Bhagwandeen, 44, lying in the road, bleeding from injuries to his head. He died at the scene.

Bhagwandeen, a labourer, was positively identified as Sumraj Bhagwandeen, 44, by a male relative at the scene, who said he was last seen by family around 7 pm on Christmas Day.

Police received reports that he may have been intoxicated at the time he was last seen by relatives.

It is believed he may have been heading back to his home when the accident occurred.

Investigations are continuing into both fatalities.
