UN Secretary General speaks to Venezuela’s Maduro

The Unit­ed Na­tions re­newed its ur­gent call for re­straint and de-es­ca­la­tion amid ris­ing ten­sions in the re­gion fol­low­ing a phone call be­tween Sec­re­tary-Gen­er­al An­tónio Guter­res and Venezue­lan Pres­i­dent Nico­las Maduro.

It was con­firmed via a press re­lease by the Of­fice of the Sec­re­tary-Gen­er­al that Guter­res re­ceived the call from Maduro to dis­cuss the cur­rent sit­u­a­tion.

Dur­ing the con­ver­sa­tion, the Sec­re­tary-Gen­er­al reaf­firmed the Unit­ed Na­tions’ po­si­tion that Mem­ber States must re­spect in­ter­na­tion­al law, par­tic­u­lar­ly the Unit­ed Na­tions Char­ter, and take steps to de-es­ca­late ten­sions in or­der to pre­serve re­gion­al sta­bil­i­ty.
