41 schools to close tomorrow over Carnival traffic concerns

Forty-one schools in and around Port of Spain will be closed to­mor­row as Car­ni­val ac­tiv­i­ties in­ten­si­fy in the cap­i­tal.

In a mem­o­ran­dum dat­ed Feb­ru­ary 11, 2026, the Chief Ed­u­ca­tion Of­fi­cer is­sued in­struc­tions for the sus­pen­sion of class­es on Fri­day, Feb­ru­ary 13, 2026, for schools with­in the Port of Spain and En­vi­rons Ed­u­ca­tion Dis­trict.

A source with­in the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion con­firmed the de­ci­sion was tak­en in an­tic­i­pa­tion of height­ened traf­fic as mul­ti­ple Car­ni­val events are ex­pect­ed to take place on Car­ni­val Fri­day.

The clo­sure af­fects 21 pri­ma­ry schools and 20 sec­ondary schools.

The pri­ma­ry schools are: As­cen­sion AC; Bel­mont Boys’ RC; Bel­mont Girls’ RC; Bel­mont Gov­ern­ment; Beth­le­hem Boys’ RC; Beth­le­hem Girls’ RC; Care­nage Boys’ Gov­ern­ment; Care­nage Girls’ Gov­ern­ment; Cas­cade School for the Deaf (Spe­cial); Co­corite Gov­ern­ment; Crys­tal Stream Gov­ern­ment; Di­a­mond Vale Gov­ern­ment; Diego Mar­tin Boys’ RC; Diego Mar­tin Gov­ern­ment; East­ern Boys’ Gov­ern­ment; East­ern Girls’ Gov­ern­ment; Four Roads Gov­ern­ment; Gaines Nor­mal AME; Gloster Lodge Mora­vian; and La Puer­ta Gov­ern­ment.

The sec­ondary schools are: Bel­mont Sec­ondary; St Fran­cois Girls’ Col­lege; Fa­ti­ma Col­lege; Rus­sell Lat­apy; Bel­mont Boys Sec­ondary; St James Sec­ondary; St Joseph’s Con­vent; Queen’s Roy­al Col­lege; Suc­cess Laven­tille Sec­ondary; St Mary’s Col­lege; Bish­op Anstey Girls’ High School; Tran­quil­li­ty Sec­ondary School; Mu­cu­rapo West Sec­ondary School; St An­tho­ny’s Col­lege; South East Port of Spain; Prov­i­dence Girls’ Catholic School; Wood­brook Sec­ondary School; Mor­vant Laven­tille Sec­ondary School; and Trin­i­ty Col­lege.

The mem­o­ran­dum states that nor­mal school op­er­a­tions will re­sume on Wednes­day, March 18, 2026, for the iden­ti­fied schools.
