Woman escapes kidnapping in South Oropouche

A 40-year-old counter clerk was kid­napped and robbed af­ter en­ter­ing a car she be­lieved to be a taxi in San Fer­nan­do on Fri­day night.

Po­lice said around 8.50 pm, the woman was stand­ing near Li­brary Cor­ner when a white Nis­san B15 pulled up. She en­tered the car, be­liev­ing it to be a taxi, and asked to be tak­en to Dow Vil­lage, South Oropouche.

When the dri­ver reached the Oropouche round­about, he turned on­to the Shore of Peace road­way in­stead and con­tin­ued dri­ving, tak­ing her against her will. He then de­mand­ed her be­long­ings, and she hand­ed over her Sam­sung A05 cell­phone and a wal­let con­tain­ing $13.

A strug­gle fol­lowed, dur­ing which she was in­jured but man­aged to es­cape by jump­ing out of the ve­hi­cle. She lat­er made a re­port at the Oropouche Po­lice Sta­tion.

On Tues­day, of­fi­cers went to the South­ern Main Road in Dow Vil­lage, where the sus­pect was point­ed out and iden­ti­fied by the vic­tim. He was ar­rest­ed and tak­en to the Point Fortin Hos­pi­tal af­ter com­plain­ing of pain from pre­vi­ous in­juries.

Doc­tors lat­er trans­ferred him to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal for surgery af­ter di­ag­nos­ing a blowout frac­ture to his right eye sock­et, haem­or­rhage in the si­nus, and soft tis­sue in­juries to the chest, ab­domen, and right arm.
