TT trio released by MLS clubs

The Trinidad and Tobago trio of midfielder Cordell Cato, defenders Mekeil Williams and Shannon Gomez will all be in pursuit of new clubs, as their contracts with their respective MLS (Major League Soccer) teams were not renewed, as the 2017 season draws to a close.

The 25-year-old Cato, who ran afoul of national coach Dennis Lawrence in June for disciplinary reasons, did not score a goal during his last two seasons at San Jose Earthquakes, having played 15 MLS games in 2017 and 21 the year before.

The right winger played five seasons at San Jose Earthquakes, after a year-long stint at Seattle Sounders FC in 2012. Williams, a 27-year-old who plays both as a left-back or in central defence, was one of eight players not retained by Colorado Rapids for the 2018 season.

This past season, he made 17 league appearances, after featuring in 21 games in the 2016 MLS season. And Gomez, a former national Under-20 captain who plays as a right back, never played an MLS game during his two years at New York City FC, but spent some time on loan for another American club Pittsburgh Riverhounds during their 2017 campaign.
