Three workers injured in supermarket robbery in Scarborough

Po­lice are still search­ing for a group of men who at­tacked three su­per­mar­ket work­ers while they were asleep and es­caped with thou­sands of dol­lars in cash dur­ing a rob­bery in Scar­bor­ough ear­ly Mon­day morn­ing.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice, the in­ci­dent oc­curred around 2 a.m. at Eday Su­per­mar­ket on Wil­son Road in down­town Scar­bor­ough. Own­er Lil­iong Zou re­port­ed that three of his em­ploy­ees — Jin­hai Zheng, 20, Yax­i­an Zheng, 49, and Wen­zhong Chen, 49 — were asleep up­stairs when they were star­tled by loud bang­ing at the su­per­mar­ket’s door.

A short while lat­er, about sev­en men, all armed with knives, en­tered the build­ing through a win­dow on the west­ern side and went in­to the room where the work­ers were.

The sus­pects de­mand­ed cash and be­gan at­tack­ing the work­ers, in­flict­ing sev­er­al chop wounds. The vic­tims, fear­ing for their lives, com­plied. The men then fled with an es­ti­mat­ed TT$200,000 and US$15,000. They re­port­ed­ly left through a door on the south­ern side of the build­ing.

The in­jured work­ers were tak­en for med­ical treat­ment and are said to be re­cov­er­ing. The in­juries were not life-threat­en­ing.

Crime scene in­ves­ti­ga­tors vis­it­ed and processed the scene.
