Puerto Rico Lays Off More Than 200 Dozen Workers


CaribWorldNews, SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Mon. Jan. 11, 2010: More than 200 dozen workers across Puerto Rico have been given pink slips.

The Puerto Rico government laid off more than 2,400 government workers Friday as it tries to pare down a $3.2 billion deficit to avoid a complete governmental shutdown.

Most of the fired workers were janitors and office administrators with the Department of Education, according to union leaders in the U.S. Several thousand more layoffs are anticipated for March.
