The North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) has completed the first phase of an electrical and lighting upgrade project at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC). The work, which began last month, included the installation and repair of 120 lighting fixtures across parking areas, roadways, and other high traffic areas. The project received support from the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC).

The second phase of the upgrade is ongoing and will focus on replacing defective light poles and installing additional lighting fixtures to provide full illumination coverage across the EWMSC campus. These upgrades are part of a broader electrical project that also included the installation of a new transformer in September to improve the safety and stability of the facility’s power supply.

In addition to the lighting works, NCRHA completed cooling system upgrades at the Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU) of the EWMSC. Between 24th and 26th October 2025, a new air-conditioning system was installed, including two air handlers and four condensers, replacing units in operation for over 15 years. Staff reported a cooler environment, which is expected to allow the resumption of cardiac and other critical surgical procedures previously postponed due to the defective system.

NCRHA Chairman Dr. Tim Gopeesingh commended the teams and partner stakeholders for their professionalism. Dr. Gopeesingh stated that the upgrades were essential to improving patient safety, comfort, and care quality. He added that the improvements reflect the authority’s commitment to delivering efficient and reliable healthcare to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
