Jamaica-born Lorna Mahlock has created history by becoming the first woman commanding as a two-star general in the United States Marine Corps.

She enlisted in the Marine Corps at 17 after moving to the US from Kingston.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness praised Mahlock’s promotion as an ‘incredible achievement’ since the Marine Corps is known to have the fewest women serving.

“Let’s hold up the example of Jamaican women making monumental strides,” Holness said.
