Caroni man shot by police during cutlass attack

A 41-year-old man is in sta­ble con­di­tion af­ter be­ing shot four times by po­lice in Ca­roni on Fri­day night.

Po­lice said around 9 pm of­fi­cers re­spond­ed to re­ports of a dis­tur­bance com­ing from a house at Hy­draulic Road, Kel­ly Vil­lage, Ca­roni. How­ev­er, when the of­fi­cers ar­rived the man re­port­ed­ly be­gan hurl­ing “mis­siles” out of his house.

As of­fi­cers spoke to a 41-year-old woman, who al­so re­sides at the prop­er­ty, two of­fi­cers ap­proached the man’s house and ad­vised him to stop throw­ing items on­to the premis­es which was oc­cu­pied by the woman.

Even though the of­fi­cers iden­ti­fied them­selves, the sus­pect con­tin­ued to hurl mis­siles and glass bot­tles at the law­men, be­fore bran­dish­ing a cut­lass.

As he rushed to­wards them with the cut­lass, one of­fi­cer pulled his po­lice-is­sued firearm and dis­charged six shots in the di­rec­tion of the sus­pect who fell to the ground.

He was tak­en by of­fi­cers to the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex, Mt Hope, where he was treat­ed for gun­shot wounds to the up­per right side of the stom­ach, left thigh, left an­kle and left calf.

The sus­pect was said to be in a sta­ble con­di­tion at hos­pi­tal yes­ter­day. —An­na-Lisa Paul
